In the southwest of Mashhad and near Vakil Abad Forest Park, Vakil Abad Zoo is situated which is the only zoo in Mashhad and Khorasan Razavi province.

The history of the establishment of the first zoo in Mashhad dates back to 1960, which was located in the current Al-Rabi ibn Khuthaym area. With the establishment of the Vakil Abad Zoo in 1980, Mashhad witnessed the re-establishment of its zoo at the entrance of Vakilabad Forest Park on an area of 4-hectare. This zoo is the largest in Iran, and homes a variety of animal species.

Vakil Abad Zoo has carnivores, herbivores, fish, reptiles, and birds, including endangered and some extremely rare animals such as Bengal tiger, Indonesian tiger, white oryx, aoudad sheep, alligator, Llama, African leopard, lynx, etc. and also Tigon (a new species derived from the mating of male lion and female tigers).

According to the Vakil Abad Zoo, there are 125 species of animals including 49 species of birds, 61 species of mammals and rodents, 5 species of reptiles and 10 species of aquatic animals, the total number of which is 812. The proliferation of extinct species is another important activity in the Vakil Abad Zoo.
